Autumn is creeping up on us

15/08/2025

I know it may still feel like a while off, but over the last few months we have been busy crafting our next load of seasonal menus and it has really got me dreaming of the autumn months ahead. When autumn approaches with a chill in the air, I start to think of piping hot pies, rich braises and Sunday lunches (I’m salivating as I write this!) and with a new season of vegetables and fruit to work with, planning and writing new seasonal menus really is one of the best parts of the job.

But, it’s not just the food that makes Autumn special. It’s the time of year to get the fires back roaring, the bottles of red wine out and the wellies on! For me, there is something so magical and comforting about this time of year and this becomes even more prominent in the pubs. Autumn staycations are definitely becoming more popular and with the beautiful countryside surrounding our pubs, I can absolutely understand why.

And of course, there are the autumnal puddings – they just hit different with a chill in the air don’t they?! Warm apple crumble, sticky toffee pudding with custard, banana pudding, bread and butter pudding – which one would you choose? Bread and butter pudding is one of my absolute FAVOURITES, and it is so versatile. I like to make it with croissants or brioche (and sometimes, with a sprinkling of chocolate). I know some of you may be firm believers in sticking with the traditional take on this classic dessert but, I once tried a raspberry and white chocolate bread and butter pudding (try to keep an open mind!) and I will definitely be making it again when the time of year permits it.

I must be honest, do I feel a little down beat that there are only a couple of weeks left of the summer holidays. It is always so special to make memories with my family, and I am enjoying the time with my boys. That said, we have so much exciting stuff coming up in the next couple of months and the change of season (for me!) is most definitely one of them.

I would love to hear about your favourite autumnal recipes. Favourite stews, pies, comfort foods, puddings, wines – whatever it may be! I look forward to hearing from you.

Have a great weekend!

Big Love
